Research Internship Positions Summer 2023 – Greece

Archipelagos Institute of Marine Conservation still has spots available for
the *Marine Mammal and Research Conservation INTERNSHIPS ON-SITE*.

Archipelagos is a Greek non-profit, non-governmental organization combining
multidisciplinary scientific research and efficient conservation work with
the active participation of local communities since 1998.

*Internship details:*

The position is open for the months of *July onwards in Samos Island *(North
Eastern Aegean Sea, Greece). This internship program is available for
students, graduates and researchers in marine, ecological and environmental
sciences and/or veterinary medicine. As part of this internship, you will
be involved in the monitoring of cetacean, Mediterranean monk seal and sea
turtle populations through visual and acoustic surveys.

As part of our team, you can expect to gain skills and experience in:

·       Conducting boat surveys

·       Training on monitoring protocol and cetacean identification

·       Data collection & analysis

·       Photo-ID

·       Acoustic monitoring

·       Behavioural study of cetaceans

·       Seabird identification

·       Sea turtle identification

·       Monitoring of the Mediterranean monk seal

·       Basic marine mammal first aid and necropsy

·       Preparing for the development of The Aegean Marine Life Sanctuary

Also, you can expect to gain experience in different Software such as:

·       Rstudio

·       QGis

·       SocProg – group structure analysis

·       BORIS software – Behavioural analysis

·       Raven Pro 1.6

·       PamGuard



Successful applicants must be able to work both independently and as part
of a dynamic, multicultural, multidisciplinary team. During multi-day
expeditions, the research team lives on the research boat, so applicants
must be able to live in tight quarters for several days at a time. Fluency
in English is required, as well as motivation to live in a small island
community with simple facilities.

*As a non-profit organization Archipelagos cannot cover the living and
working costs of the interns. Therefore, all interns will need to cover the
monthly placement fees (*For more information please refer to
admissions at archipelago.gr <admissions at archipelago.gr>*). This covers
accommodation, full board, use of equipment, use of the research boats and
transport for working purposes.

Please note that travel costs are NOT included in this price and are
covered by the participant. Students and recent graduates are advised to
explore possible funding through their universities, by getting in touch
with the Finance / International Relations / Placement/ Erasmus+ Offices at
their Universities or other relevant grant-providing organizations in their
region.
