Dear MARMAM Subscribers,

apologies for cross-posting.

I just received a note from colleague Prof. Bruno Cozzi from the University of Padua, Italy, that two Cuvier's beaked whales, an adult female (>5 m long) and a 2 m-long calf, stranded last night near the Capo Rizzuto MPA, Ionian coast of Calabria, Italy; the stranding occurred approx. 120 n.m. due west from Corfu, where the stranding of three Cuvier's beaked whales was reported by Alexandros Frantzis. The adult female is dead, while the calf was still alive and was towed to sea by well-meaning, albeit untrained bystanders, before informing on the event. After having been informed about the Capo Rizzuto stranding by employees of the MPA, Bruno alerted the local veterinary authorities ("Istituto Zooprofilattico") in charge.

The emergency intervention unit of the University of Padua is trying to get information about the live calf. Eventual inquiries should be directed to the head of unit, Dr. Sandro Mazzariol <sandro.mazzariol at unipd.it>, not to me.
