[ilds] KNAUSGAARD MENTIONS LD

Well spotted, Charles, but I think Knaussgard quite misunderstood LD's quote which calls for us to recreate in art our unconscious - not to think it will come to us as some sleepy inspiration.

I am biased against Knaussgard - disliked vol 1 so much that I gave it and vol 2 (which I had ordered with vol 1) away pretty quickly. K seems to me to be one of those writers who take several pages to say what could and should be said in 1 para.

Dear Ken:

That is a paraphrase of Pursewarden's advice to Clea.

“I can only tell you what I know, and it isn’t much. First you have to know and understand intellectually what you want to do — then you have to sleep-walk a little to reach it."

Be well!

I’ve been enjoying MIN KAMP thanks in part to Don Bartlett’s translation. I’ve read BOOK 4, BOOK 1, and now near the end of BOOK 2 Karl Ove says “Writing a novel is setting yourself a goal and then walking there in your sleep – Lawrence Durrell had once said that was what it was like, and it was true.” Does anyone recognize the quotation?

Thanks - Ken
