Bruce the fact that the letters 'sound like Durrell' is the most suspicious point: to me, they read like the Durrell-Miller letters I would have written AS A PASTICHE - they 'sound' right buit there are passages where Durrell nods, and others where it sounds so very familiar that either they have appeared in print previously and I had fogotten having seen them before, OR they are lifted/paraphrased to within an inch of their authenticity. Hmmm

MacNiven?s ?foreign residence? books aptly applies to Prospero?s Cell, Bitter Lemons, and Reflections, but what about Sicilian Carousel and Greek Islands, which are indeed travel books? All would subsume under ?island books,? I would guess. Durrell, however, is very hard to classify, for all his works are in some sense fictional, and he was always, to use Said?s phrase, ?out of place.? You might even classify the Quartet, along with the Quintet, as a ?foreign residence? series.Bruce> On Nov 10, 2015, at 10:01 AM, Kennedy Gammage wrote:> > Anthony, what a lovely gift your PDF from Clouds Hill Books was!
