"I just read it on the tiny screen of my cell phone waiting for new tires to be put on my wife's car". That has to be all of human misery consummated in a single sentence. RP-----Original Message-----

I justread it on the tiny screen of my cell phone waiting for new tires to be puton my wife's car. That voice! Durrell springs right to life from the keysof his old typewriter. If I may just bring up a point of discussion we have had in the pastconcerning the genre of Prospero, Marine Venus and Bitter Lemons, I wasgratified that Mr. MacNiven refers to them as 'foreign residence' books, noting that Durrell hated traveling. I feel vindicated!Cheers - KenOn Tue, Nov 10, 2015 at 12:13 AM, Anthony Hirst <anthony.hirst at btinternet.com> wrote:> This may not be news to ILDS list readers, but, just in case it is, I> thought I should pass it on. Well done. The transcription is very useful. I would recommend the purchase of the letters to the McPherson Library, Special Collections, U of Victoria, BC. James Gifford is probably on top of this.Bruce> On Nov 10, 2015, at 12:13 AM, Anthony Hirst wrote:> > This may not be news to ILDS list readers, but, just in case it is, I thought I should pass it on. MacNiven?s ?foreign residence? books aptly applies to Prospero?s Cell, Bitter Lemons, and Reflections, but what about Sicilian Carousel and Greek Islands, which are indeed travel books? All would subsume under ?island books,? I would guess. Durrell, however, is very hard to classify, for all his works are in some sense fictional, and he was always, to use Said?s phrase, ?out of place.? You might even classify the Quartet, along with the Quintet, as a ?foreign residence? series.Bruce> On Nov 10, 2015, at 10:01 AM, Kennedy Gammage wrote:> > Anthony, what a lovely gift your PDF from Clouds Hill Books was!
