Sadly, the lack of interest in the Durrells is, as you suggest, a “general phenomenon.” That is my sense, anyway, here in California and the States as a whole. But as James and others have noted, “Tastes change.” Lawrence Durrell is owed a “second look,” and “second looks” happen all the time. I recently read Grace Metalious’s Peyton Place for the first time. When it came out in the late 1950s, contemporaneous with the Quartet, it was a sensation, synonymous with sex, and I, like most youths of my generation, skimmed it for the sexy scenes, which weren’t very many. (“Peyton Place with camels,” LD said about the film version of Justine.) But the book’s power lies elsewhere, and that has to do with American culture of the 50s. Academics are now studying it for that. Ardis Cameron has written a good book on the subject: Unbuttoning America: A Biography of “Peyton Place” (2015). Maybe Justine is Peyton Place with mummies.

Her account of how she was told quite unequivocally that there was no interest in LD seems to extend to GD also (Meta has also translated MFOA). Meta wants to translate more Durrell (both kinds) but there is, apparently, no market. Is the neglect of/disdain for/ignorance of LD and GD in the Slavic countries a general phenomenon or is it limited to Slovenia?

I graduated with a thesis on Alexandria Quartet years ago. A few years ago I translated the Dark Labyrinth into Slovenian language and at the time I was translating it there indeed was a wide discussion on the book on the ILDS list. I wonder if your thesis has an abstract in English, and if so, could you possibly send it to me? I would love to read it. If not I would be very happy if you could point out a few accents from your thesis. I'm so glad to hear there still are people who enjoy and appreciate Durrell's literature. In Slovenia he is not at all popular unfortunately. I do hope you will atttend next year's Durrell conference on Crete. I certainly plan to be there and am looking forward to meeting you.
