David,
Brewster describes this residence, the second after relocating to the Midi, in his Chronology: “Mid-summer [1958]: Claude and LD visit an isolated ruined farmhouse (the Mazet Michel) with 22 acres of garrique and olive groves with a small out-building for guests, off the chemin d’Engances near Uzès on the Avignon-Nȋmes road, about 15 miles from Sommières, which they rent for five years with an option to buy.”
Hope this helps,
Bruce

He then bought the Mazet Michel 'just of the road near Uzes on the Nimes to Avignon Road. I imagine this is findable. We have friends in Nimes who know the country well and speak fluent French. Catherine is very good at making uninvited visits to local vignerons who, duly charmed, allow extensive tastings inn their cellars. LD would have approved.
> Didn't Gerry Durrell end up living at the Mazet for a while? yes, I think he did. I have printed off your attachment and will take it with us. I am hoping to make the next OMG which is rumoured to be landing in Crete, a place I have been before and liked very much. Might have to do some Paddy Leigh Fermor hiking and find the place where Campion leapt into blue air.

> I can't recall the exact location of Le Mazet, but it will be in Ian's biog. and perhaps in Bowker's as well. I can't remember if it is in my chronology and don't have a copy to hand.
> The vampire house is indeed in private hands and not open to the public as far as I know. In the center of town there is the Espace Durrell, sort of a gallery/community center. The restaurant/hotel Auberge du Pont Romain has always satisfied out taste for good food and wine; LD ate there often.
> The Saintes Maries isn't what it was in LD's time, full of tourists and mod-con development, but the church is worth a visit and we've always eaten very well at Le Bruleur de Loups (sit at a window seat; it's also a small hotel). If you can find a copy of my memoir The Time in Tavel you'll find a section on the Stes Maries.
> In Paris LD liked Cafe du Dome for food and drink, less expensive then than now. If you don't want to eat sit in the glassed in terrace for a coffee or a drink. He stayed with some consistency at the Hotel Royale around the corner from the Dome. Also ate at Le Coupole down the Boulevarde Monparnasse.
> In Avignon, he used the Hotel Europe for assignations and overnights. We've had drinks there many times over the years in the courtyard, and the restaurant has retrieved its Michelin star but we;ve not eaten there is more than a decade.
> I'll attach a copy of a travelogues I've written about Provence which might be of some use to you.
