Hi Bruce,

Racing, but briefly:

> /Art and Outrage/ (1961). I wonder what was left out.

The good stuff, in general... The real matter was all tied, rephrased,
and went through three full sets of revisions. Indeed!! There's even a
lengthy correspondence about editing the book itself.

> Compare the differences between the Wickes (1963) and
> MacNiven (1988) editions of the Durrell-Miller letters.

I've always liked that the Wickes is more complete for the early years,
though the editorial hand is more unclear. It is, however, impossible
for an editor to be invisible, whether through selection, choices for
annotation (and the expectations of different readerships), hierarchical
organization, and so forth.

It would be grand to see something on the scope of Ellman's Joyce
letters or the collected mss. of Joyce, but I thin that moment is going
to take some time for a publisher to take it on and provide the
multi-year support it would need.

All best,
James
