I have been more deeply saddened by this news than of any other Durrell loss since the death of Jay Brigham. These were senior scholars who combined their deep scholarship with a profound humanity - in Bill Godshalk's case with an amazingly fresh and invigorating energy that transmitted itself to all he met. The depth of his scholarship - especially on the Elizabethans - was quite breathtaking. His warmth and fun-loving, his infectious smile, his relishing of the bawdy and profane, his sensitivity, his capacity for both enjoyment and kindness to others, were the mark of a truly unique personality. I feel that, quite apart from the huge loss to Durrell scholarship, I have lost a personal limb - Bill, as a friend, became a part of you , you couldn't contemplate a gathering of Durrellians without his humour, dedication and knowledge. No-one, including Bill himself, will ever know how many times he was married, or to whom. For all his wives, children, for all his cherished books and related items (I guess a 'unique collection'), and for all whom he rewarded with his presence, we must feel immense sadness.

For everyone who read him, his scholarship was extraordinary. For me, rather than dwell on the sadness, I'm trying to remember Bill when I first met him in person on Corfu in 2000: leaping off the side of the boat into the bay under the Shrine of Saint Arsenius...Kindest thoughts to all of you.James------------------------------Message: 2Date: Wed, 04 Mar 2015 00:48:57 +0100From: Marc Piel To: james.d.gifford at gmail.com, ilds at lists.uvic.caSubject: Re: [ilds] William Leigh GodshalkMessage-ID: <54F64869.9000305 at marcpiel.fr>Content-Type: text/plain; charset="windows-1252"; Format="flowed"thany you James, please pass on my sympathy to family and friends,B.R. I never met him but enjoyed his wry commentary. I was waiting for his comparison of Middleton?s Black Book and Durrell?s. What little time I spent with Bill at the London conference was thoroughly enjoyable. Was so looking forward to seeing him again.
