I'd tend to note Liddell's allusion to T.S. Eliot's /The Waste Land/ in
his title and Durrell's refutations of the same in the /Quartet/. After
all, Durrell asserts that his city is "Real" even though it's obviously
fictionalized... The struggle was on against Eliot as the strong poet
as early as /Panic Spring/ and was made clear in /The Black Book/, which
he offered Eliot for publication.
The Durrell-Liddell correspondence is held in the Gennadius Library in
Athens and is quite intriguing.
Cheers,
James
