discussion about boosting the interactivity on the [ilds] listserv? We used
to have some freewheeling discussions about Durrell, wine and related

A noble idea, Ken!  I'm thinking about Durrell's /Revolt of Aphrodite/ 
right now, and more generally about the superiority of Laphroaig's 
Quartet Cask line in contrast to their 10 year or sherry barrel (I've 
not tried the triple-wood).

I've been re-reading Durrell's /A Private Country/ lately too and am 
struck by it again, as I seem to be each time I pick it up.

You're right to wonder about social media though -- word is, Twitter is 
tweeting Old D on a continuous basis.

Very good James. I have an outline for a paper on the Revolt titled:
"Postmodern Sci-Fi or Gothic Romance?" On my next reading I am hoping to
confirm my belief that World War II is never mentioned anywhere in the
Revolt.

Of course Laphroaig is justly celebrated as the peaty nectar of Islay,
along with its rival Lagavulin. Lovely stuff.

I have several books of Durrell's poetry. Which poems in A Private Country
have particularly struck you?

I am reading Patrick White's bio by David Marr; It is very likely that he and LD met in Alex:
- both were there at the same time,
- both frequented George de Menasce and family,
- both met Robert Liddel, 
- both frequented the same area in Alex -PW and his friend, lived Rue Safia Zaghoul, 2 streets up from LD's office,
- Surely they must have met through their war service working for the Brits?

I am not half way through yet.

Mars, I have raised the possibility of this connection before. Marr makes no mention of Durrell and White meeting and neither it seems does any Durrell scholarship this. I have raised this matter on the list before and there was no response. maybe no one knows anything? White read Durrell's work and liked it. Given what you list below it is highly likely they met. Maybe they did not hit it off; both very different characters socially, one ebullient and one withdrawn.
