I don't think there is any way of expressing my appreciation to the author excepting through this response the ILDS. I found the article wonderfully perceptive and sensitive to the aesthetics of Durrell's writing and particularly to his creation of landscape. I have not read Foucault and am not therefore directly familiar with deconstructionism, but in the context of Durrell's familiar creation of Alexandria, I was able to relate to Foucault's "counter-sites": "Places of this kind are outside of all places even though it may be possible to indicate their location in reality." The comparison with specific paintings is also notable, and illustrates the aesthetics of Durrell's writing very well.
