I did not know of NIKI MARANGOU but found these videos very moving. Thank
you for circulating their link.

 

I miss the detailed literary appreciation and analysis of Justine which was
once undertaken on the ILDS Discussion Forum and wonder whether the activity
can be revived in some form. It seemed to have been abandoned partially
because it seemed to overshadow other general discussions on the forum.
Durrell's poetry also provides a rich field for discussion.

 

There was a very lively month long discussion on The Guardian's Reading
group: The Alexandria Quartet
(http://www.guardian.co.uk/books/2012/mar/01/reading-group-alexandria-quarte
t-lawrence-durrell#start-of-comments) last year's during the centenary
celebrations. This kind of discussion could be carried on in the ILDS
Discussion Forum. It could be a separate discussion which leaves people free
to discuss general topics of their interest as well.

 

Shall look forward to some form of a revived textual discussion particularly
on The Alexandria Quartet and Durrell's poetry if the ILDS forum members
have an appetite for it.

I notice that Niki's website still offers a presentation of her watercolours

capture her view of daily life in Alexandria, Cyprus, Athens, &c., and I
recall her sharing these with me some time ago.

These books, these poems, these paintings.  Strange how they draw us
together from our different homelands.  Stranger still how an unexpected
absence can cast light on the true nature of presence.
