Brava to Jennifer Condo for her astonishing accomplishment! Our thoughts go out to Mike in this time of loss. Below follows a brief obituary, which was forwarded to us by a member of the American Farm School: Mary Stathatos-Kyris Keeley, who died on Oct. 25, 2012, was a life-long devotee of Modern Greek and French literature. She was born of Greek parents in Alexandria, Egypt, and earned her baccalaureate at the local French Lyc?e. She entered Oxford University at St. Hugh's College in 1949 with a major in Modern Greek and French Literature and graduated with a Bachelor's degree in those subjects in l952. By that time she had met her husband, Edmund "Mike" Keeley, the other Oxford student in Modern Greek. The couple moved to Providence, RI, where Mike began his career as a university professor of English at Brown University. In 1954, Mary and Mike settled in Princeton, where they contributed to the university's Hellenic Studies community for decades. Mary taught Modern Greek at Princeton University for several years and also served for a number of years as secretary to the Music Department and to the Near Eastern Studies Program. Mary became a sought-after translator of Modern Greek literature and published a number of translations over the years, including the well-received Vassilis Vassilikos trilogy, The Plant, the Well, the Angel, his novel The Monarch, and a volume of the correspondence of Dimitris Mitropoulos. Mary also collaborated on the translation of contemporary Greek poets, among these the Nobel laureate George Seferis and the poets Manolis Anagnostakis and Katerina Angelaki-Rooke. Mary was always a gracious hostess who brought the sun to those who came to her home on Littlebrook Road and a generous friend to travelers from Princeton and elsewhere who shared her annual journeys to Greece and her broad knowledge of its delights. She was also a devoted and loyal wife to her husband of 61 years.
