Peter Pomerantsev seems to have looked back from the increasingly multi-cultural milieus of the 21st century and found a broad social link with The Alexandria Quartet. As an Indian who was first attracted by the AQ many years ago - during my adolescence which is when most people seem to have responded most strongly to these novels - it is interesting to read the following confession from Lawrence Durrell: "I have an Indian heart and an English skin," he said. "I realized this very late, when I was twenty-one, twenty-two. It created a sort of psychological crisis. I nearly had a nervous breakdown. I realized suddenly that I was not English really, I was not European. There was something going on underneath and I realized that it was the effect of India on my thinking." I also find the following observation by the author rather ominous - in what direction? I don't know: "It is always the "cross-patriates," the hyphenated, who are drawn to Durrell." Two of the speakers were in their 40s, too. Not that Joanna Hodgin isnt marvelously youthful! But when I read the article, it made me wonder if the author attended a different talk at the British Library.
