> The Oxford Companion to English Literature (1985) identifies Thomas Warton (1728-90) as professor of poetry at Oxford (1757-67), poet laureate, and author of a "valuable work," The History of English Poetry (3 vols., 1774-81). The Companion also calls that work "the first literary history of any real scope." I would say, Bill, that you're onto something re "heraldic" and that Lawrence Durrell could have well come across the treatise in the British Library. Moreover, "prolixity" is an interesting word, rather uncommon, and one that I associate with Durrell: "One knows that a god must be prolix . . . " So there may well have been a connection. I would like, however, to know more about Warton's context of "heraldic."
