What does it mean?

You will remember Clea and Darley swimming while Balthazar casually watches. The imagery of that scene comes from Mott. I think it has something to do with the trauma of birth -- or in this case the trauma of rebirth -- as Darley plays the force that brings Clea back to life.

Ian discusses Durrell's infatuation with Mott.

Durrell, however, had some Mott materials in his mss. at Carbondale
(Mott's ms., that is, in Durrell's files):

Box 27: Manuscripts

Durrell and Mott also appear in some of the same short-run journals in
the 1940s.

Many thanks to Bill and James for this information.

I look forward to hearing more. I will be entirely dependent upon Bill, James, and others here to let me know what it all means.
