From: Denise Tart & David Green To: Durrel Cc: Charles-Sligh at utc.edu; bredwine1968 at earthlink.net Sent: Monday, June 6, 2011 9:35 AM Subject: [ilds] an interesting one Originally published as?Cefal?, The Dark Labyrinth?tells the story of a group of travellers who become lost in an underground labyrinth on Crete, a labyrinth which may or may not still be inhabited by the minotaur. The story unfolds with a peculiar blend of allegory and symbolism, which some readers have rejected as being too uneven. However, although it may be one of Durrell's more minor works, it's certainly an interesting one. The last five words say it all. ? Btw, one of my year twelve students is using Dark Labyrinth as part of her major project on 'The Labyrinth'. she enjoyed Durrell's book very and is interested in reviews, scholarship and so forth on it. Perhaps members of the ilds can, to use teacher speak, direct her learning. Marc Piel will be pleased to learn that the student in question is half French, the other half being Canadian of the non French Variety; plains of Abraham and all that. My publisher wants a quotation of some well known person, perhaps a friend of Durrell or a critic. I couldn't find anything very useful so far, so your suggestions would be very welcome. It's about his friend, the herbalist Ludo Chardenon. It also contains information on Chardenon's herbalist works. Durrell also wrote the introduction to Chardenon's memoirs (en fran?ais...). As for /The Red Limbo Lingo: A Poetry Notebook/, it came out through Fabers in 1971 and has both illustration and poetry as well as poetic prose sketches. I seem to recall that Sappho added the drawings (I may be wrong since my copy isn't ready to hand). The poems contain a good deal about blood and vampires. Both books were brought out in special limited editions as well. In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: Fermor was an extraordinary man. Among many other accomplishments, he knew his Horace and carried on his travels a copy of the Odes and Epodes. There's a story somewhere, I forget where, about the capture on Crete of the German general Kriepe. Fermor's commando unit was making it way across the island, and the group stopped before a mountain. Kriepe looked at the snow-capped peak and began to recite from memory Ode 1.9: "Vides ut alta stet nive candidum / Socrate" (You see how deep [Mount] Socrate stands in white snow). The general stopped, maybe half way through, and then Fermor finished the remaining twelve lines. In Latin, of course.
