Look at Shakespeare and his late work, the four Romances, The Tempest, in particular. Durrell may have been moving in that direction.

The Tempest maybe pivotal to our understanding of the Durrell's island phase: exiled dukes, castaways seeking love, island spirits and ultimately a restored world order. Charles can best speak to the clear links between The Tempest and Prospero's Cell. it is significant to note that when on Cyprus Durrell planned to spend the winter with his Elizabethans so Bruce I think your essay on Larry's exploration of and use of the pastoral is timely; consider, for example, Gideon and Larry's walking journey though Rhodes and Peter the shepherd and the lamb of god... or Durrell's usual cast of philosophic peasants who act as foils to and commentators on the higher world that Durrell and his political and artistic friends and colleagues inhabit.
