I think it's clear he didn't intend his
book to be a travel guide, nor for that matter were his travel guides
meant to be travel guides...

Very True James, but they sure want to make you be there: musing on a 
veranda with Count D, tramping with Gideon or drinking with Frangos (maybe 
not). In a way they operate on an altogether higher plane than a 'travel 
book'. Bitter Lemons is certainly more than just a spirit of place piece, 
the author gloating over a Greek Island. It has a harder edge.
