Richard,
thanks for your recent post. You have reasurred me as to why I find the Quartet, but especially the quintet difficult. There are great moments - and a sense of transportation into another world and time - but they ask to much of me. Someone once said that Wordsworth had great lines but terrible poems. I feel that way about LD's big novel cycles. I love being transported - but to corfu, rhodes, cyprus rising from the med blue and sunwashing wine and fig scented writer in waiting but doing really good stuff.
pound for pound, measure for measure, glass for glass, Bitter Lemons is by far LD's best book; thematically, structurally, everything. I enjoy prosperos more but BL is a better book, the best.
