Page 71, Penguin ed. of MONTOLIVE:  "The eagle smelt of camphor - why he could not imagine"  What is an "eagle" in this instance?  Is it the flag or standard of the Church of England thats laid over the lecturn?  And if it is a cloth covering of some sort, why does Montolive find its smell so odd?
