This is further to my earlier post.

The link below contains the text from Somerset Maugham's "The Moon and Sixpence" about the brilliant doctor Abraham who disembarked on an impulse at Alexandria and decided to live there with a modest medical job, thereby giving up an assured place in a hospital in England which could have led to great professional heights.

Best wishes

Incidentally I seem to remember that Somerset Maugham's novel "The Moon and Sixpence" contains the story of a brilliant doctor travelling on a ship, who is so enthralled by the sight of Alexandria when the ship docks there, that he decides to disembark then and there and settle in the city.

It might be interesting to locate this episode from Somerset Maugham's books - I think it is part of "The Moon and Sixpence" - and compare the setting and the situations with those represented in the AQ.
