On our summer pilgrimages to SIU-Carbondale, I have been made glad each 
time once we come to the folders with Anne Ridler's letters to Durrell. 

These letters are a vivid testimony about living with family and with 
art in a moment of austerity.  Any historian of Oxford life and letters 
during the twentieth century should spend time with the Ridler letters.
