A quick observation pulled from memory of last summer's group-read of
/Bitter Lemons/: The delayed understanding of Gideon would mark some
similarity between how Durrell presents character in /Bitter Lemons/ and
in /Reflections/.

I am recalling how the cab driver and so many other subsequent
characters appear first as stereotypes or unknowables and then quicken
into sympathetic figures.

Drink is usually the quickening agent, the necessary ingredient in the
recipe. Recall the bottle of ouzo on the road &c.
