thanks for the stuff on Cyprus. I've visited Rhodes, Crete, Delos, Corfu and some other Grecian islands and places but not Cyprus. It is definitely on the list for my next visit to Europe.

I have been reading about Durrell and Claude Ford and have come to the conclusion that they were, as we say here, good mates. As well as being lover, secretary and general companion, she was his drinking buddy too; something perhaps that Nancy and certainly Eve were not. Although Addington thought her noisy, bossy and too talkative, she had a self confidence and hardiness that appealed to LD. A writer herself she appears not to have been intimidated by Larry, nor he by her. They were suited to each other. They could cope with each other. Her death clearly left a big hole in LD's life that no other woman seems to have been able to fill.

PS - After 11 years we have a new government down here. The Australian Labor Party is back and John Howard (George Bush's 'deputy sherrif') is out on his ear in a landslide defeat.
