Given the associative context, I hear Durrell returning to Cavafy's "The 
God Abandons Antony":

        Your fortunes having failed you now,
        *Hopes gone aground*, a lifetime of desires
        Turned into smoke.

An allusion allowed, I think, between poet and reader or poet and poet.
