'Otherwise why should we hurt one another?'

Hurting one another comes from being 'ordinary people' performing
'common actions' and failing to see the cloth-of-gold, which is the
meaning of the pattern. That meaning is 'joyous compromise',
conjoining and adjusting, as in overcoming the opposition of the sexes
but also overcoming the oppositions within so-called reality. These
thoughts arise from the 'fragmentation' brought about by separation,
for which Melissa or Justine cannot bring any remission. The pain
remains but will be turned to art. But something more: the art, the
writing, is a reworking of reality. The remission will come from that.
Biographically, this is not simply Durrell writing a book; he is
rewriting his life, which necessitates compromising reality. It is
significant that this entire section is framed by the child.
