A gentle reminder of today's CABS seminar. Please join us for the final seminar of the academic year!

This Friday the Department of Psychology Cognition and Brain Sciences Program features a talk by Eric Pederson (Linguistics, University of Oregon). Dr. Pederson's talk is titled: "Head Gestures: A Comparison of Tamil and English Narratives".

"This presentation discusses the temporal structure of multimodal (verbal and nonverbal) speaker/listener interactions. The two studies reported on here have examined dyad data from spoken narratives with clear speaker/listener roles. Particular emphasis is placed on the role of non-incidental head motion, cf. Iwano et al. (1996), Maynard (1986, 1987), and Kita (1998, 2007). The first study examines the interactional timing of Indian Tamil speech, gaze, and head + manual gestures. The second examines the timing and different nodding behaviors of US English-speaking participants. From both studies, we see an apparent “decision tree” which listeners use to decide on their response behavior."

Seminar to be held on Friday Apr 12, 3:30-5:00, in COR A228 (the Reading Room; note the later starting time this semester). Everyone is welcome to attend. Arrive early to ensure a seat!
